I hope it was not a coon, but if so they will try again until they get them. Once they've tasted chicken and think of it as a food source it is hard to get them to stop. People have posted that have had trouble with hawks that attracting crows help drive them off. Better of two evils I know, but at least you do not have to worry about crows attacking adult chickens. Since I've gotten Emu, geese and ducks that hang out with the chickens I have seen less hawks. I think having two huge raptors in the yard makes them nervous as well as all the co motion the geese and ducks make. If my animals are staying in a pen then i always cover the top, even with adults, so the won't be sitting ducks for something else.
