Q 1. I keep the chickens under the deck of the house, that is where the coop is. It's chicken wired in and they are pretty safe near the house. However there are large birds hanging out on nearby branches! The other evening (before dark) I heard the chickens squawking. By the time I got to them it was to late. Chubby Chic was missing. About 100 feet away under a pine tree lay Chubby with her breast missing. My daughter was mortified. My husband proceeded to burry Chubby. When we were looking for her we noticed a large bird leave where she was at so I assume the bird carried Chubby off that distance of about 100 feet.. Now Chubby was a big chicken thus the name "Chubby Chic", and I can't imagine what would have carried her off from the fenced area?? I don't think most of the large birds like the area close to the house because they have to scoop down quite low to get a chicken!
Q 2. My second question is: do you think that putting a post with netting on top covering the run with netting would keep these large birds away. Would it however risk killing small birds that often come to visit on surrounding branches, including morning Doves? Many Thanks for sharing your thoughts and or suggestions!
