What kind brooder bedding do I need??

I get the cheapest ones at Walmart. I started using them for ducklings and then also switched over to them for chicks. They're easy to change out and if they slosh some water out there's no wet bedding.

okay, that is really smart.

I too used pine shavings after the first week. Mine now 6 weeks love to pick up a pine shaving and run with it like they have a treat. The others catch on fast when they realize its not a treat! My orpington does love a good game of chase

probably a foolish question, but why not cedar? Had 7 hatch over the last couple of days, and right now they are in pine shavings, but everyone seems to be saying to stay away from the cedar and I wondered why. Just so I know.

The oils in cedar can cause respiratory problems. The oil is what gives it that really nice smell. Chicks are so small and have super sensitive respiratory systems, so super strong odors are usually a no-no.
