What kind of black hen is this -- NEW ? in post #15.

This is Big Momma - she lays a HUGE brown egg. She is solid black (no white wing tips like an Australorp), with black legs & feet, her eyes are "pumpkin." She is a BIG girl.

I believe she is a mix (I've been wrong before, tho'), but the folks I bought her from mistakenly believed her to be an Aussie (but she's obviously NOT [okay, maybe she is]).

I purchased her for a laying hen, and she's not disappointed me yet.

Any idea on breed? Or MIX of breeds??? I've been thinking she's part black Jersey Giant, but now I'm wondering & figured you guys could help!!

Looks like it could be either Australorp or an Orpington.

She looks pretty different than them. Orpington is not a breed that I've considered. I have buffs and she does look pretty much identical to them, just a diff. color.

I would also say Australorp - some of mine lose their white wing tips when they get their adult feathers. I would think the dark legs rule out Orpington.

Mine do not have any white on them.

One of my Australorps has black eyes and the other one has brown eyes. Mine are hatchery stock from Ideal.
