Hi, I have been reading all the forums for weeks now, but today I finally registered. I think all the help you all give everyone is great. Was wondering if someone could help me out. I have 10 chickens that are about 6 weeks old now. I think 7 of the 10 are little boys, I do not know what kind of chickens these are. They are all black, but one of them is getting brown chest feathers, also, seems that his comb and wattles are more of a light orange color, not like the red the other ones have. Any ideas??? I appreciate any help you can give me...Thanks

Thanks for the replies. You think it's a pullet? He has a comb and wattles. Out of the 10 I have, only 3 don't have the combs or wattles. I figured it was a he....was hoping he was anyway. I know I should only keep one rooster and he is getting such pretty chest feathers. I did order more chickens, they are suppose to be all pullets (8). Two of 4 different breeds. Thanks for all the help. I have never had chickens before.

Black sex links hens will mature faster than most of the chickens because they are a bred that way. Your pics are very much a black sex link pullet. The males are not the same color as the females that is why they are sexlinked. It makes it easier to sort females from males. These will Not breed true as they are a mix. Also they will lay for about 2 years then be done but in that time they will lay every day almost.

The chick you have pictured does look like a BSL, but the comb seems large for a 6 week old. IF... they are black sex-links, than they are pullets. If by chance they are a mix of something else, than you may have a few roos. Since the rest of them are all black and only one has the brown chest feathers (and large comb), I'm thinking they may not be BSLs after all. My BSL pullets didn't get wattles till around 15 weeks of age. Usually roos will develop those early - you can watch for that sign in your suspected roos.

These are mine at about 5 weeks (very ugly, slow to feather - looked like little dinosaurs for a long time)

Well as posted earlier, the BSL are known for a faster maturity rate. They could also be of a different line than yours and may very well mature much faster than yours. I stand by the BSL all the way.
