What kind of damage can a BEAR do??

Sorry to get off the topic for a minute. I have had more trouble with bear than most. Next to the electric fence, I would say a rakio left on a talk sow is the best deterant. When I lived above the American River, the bear would visit me on a regular basis. I have found that they run from a light being turned on and noise. I fixed at set of lights to the switch in the bedroom so I could light up fifteen acers for a few seconds. Any longer would throw the circut breaker. But if I had only one thing to use other than an electric fence, it would be a radio. Try that and see if it doesn't let you sleep a little better.

Then maybe I should get one to be certain I get all of the number 6 shot out of my partridge the next time (Yes I know that what's wild here in Maine is really not partridge, however old names are hard to get rid of).

A lot of what you can do about this type of problem is dictated by the local laws and politics. In some places, you had better not shoot, kill, harass or insult the local wildlife. The tree huggers and nature nuts will have you in prison.

When the federal government reintroduced wolves in Arizona, they went around telling people that they would go to prison forever if they did anything to protect their livestock or families.

The truth is the federal government doesn't give a toot about the people, unless you are a foodstamper.

If a wolf killed your livestock, you could file a claim with the federal government. Of course, they never pay any losses. They just say the wolves were scavenging already dead stock.

If you do have to eliminate the bear, be careful. Killing the beast is the easy part. Dealing with the after effects can be an absolute nightmare.
