What kind of eggs???

First off, ya'll have to forgive my ignorance...

I've had chickens in the past, and have become fairly knowledgeable about them and their habits. However, I have recently inherited a flock of Sebastopol Geese and a few ducks.

I know NADA about these critters.

They seem to be happy, they are getting fed well, have lots of water to play in, free range in a fenced in "pasture," etc. etc.

But now, I'm getting eggs. I don't know the difference between duck eggs and goose eggs. What do I do with goose eggs? I'm guessing that at least some of them are fertile due to the amount of fooling around that goes on. 50 Shades has nothing on these geese! LOL.

There is no consistency in where they appear. Found 2 in the "Quack House" - where the ducks usually sleep at night, but a Sebastopol was laying on them. Found one in a chicken coop. Found another just laying in the yard. Found another on a hay bale. Do I have ADHD fowl?

Do I pick them up? Do I sell them? Do I use them for cooking?

How do I tell them apart? What is the "normal" size for a Sebastopol egg? What is the normal size for a duck egg?

What to do with goose eggs well you can cook with them the same as chicken eggs they are very similar other than size. I made some awesome omelets last year with mine. also baked with them and it doesn't matter if they are fertile or not they taste the same and cook the same. Size wise goose eggs are huge and ducks eggs will be dwarfed next to one so you can tell that way. Duck eggs also feel waxing and if you take your nail can scratch off the wax. Goose eggs are very much like chicken eggs in feel except goose eggs have a thicker shell. My goose laid her first egg in the duck house even though there is nice deep bedding in her own they can be pretty fickle when they start laying. so you never know where one may turn up. Yes pick them up and if you want a broody put a few in a nice secluded place where she has laid already and your goose won't be bothered by the flock or predators and see if someone takes the bait other wise eat them. sell them

Goose eggs from adult (not juvenile) geese are at least twice the weight of chicken eggs. The shell of goose eggs is way thicker than both duck and chicken eggs, which makes them hard to crack.

I use my goose eggs for cooking and baking. They're delicious; to me they taste exactly like the best free-range chicken eggs. When I use them in recipes, especially baking, I weigh them. My goose eggs have varied very much in size; from humble a 90 grams (first egg from a six-months-old goose) to a monstrous 286 grams (a double-yolker). Most have weighed between 140 and 170 grams. For comparison a size large chicken egg weighs about 60 grams.

The only duck eggs I've had were from Indian Runners. They were about the size of a large chicken egg, but the shell is very smooth and silky, not chalky. I also use those for cooking.

Thanks for all the information. I really appreciate it. Just found 2 more "goose" eggs this afternoon, so they are really on a roll! Funny, but it seems like the more I look at the size of those eggs, compared to the size of a chicken egg, and then what I am guessing is a duck egg, the more I lose perspective of just how large they are!

Goose egg is 210 grams, duck egg 100 grams and the chicken egg is 60 grams.

I'm getting at least 2 goose eggs per day. I am picking them up - I don't really want baby geese and the goose is so protective of the nest that she is attacking the ducks, chickens, dogs and cats when they get within 10 feet. That's just more drama!

I will post some pictures when the sun comes out and maybe you can help me identify what kind of ducks and chickens I have! This is SC, so the sun has to come out sometime, right???

Sun shine?? we are next state above you and haven't seen the sun in a while either. They are very protective of each other their nest their goslings their territory. I hope your dogs are mellow because most geese don't like dogs and well bully if given the chance which can end up getting the goose injured or killed by a dog.
