What kind of feeders do you use?

I've been using the round ones that you screw onto a jar or whatever. But my little ones seem to waste so much out of those feeders. Does anyone else use something that doesn't waste so much?

I use a 3 pound hanging feeder with my little ones. They can't get in it and scratch the feed everywhere

I built my own. They started using this when they were 8 weeks old.

For baby chicks I used the round one with a screw on jar for about a week. But they were wasting a lot. I switched to the long metal type. There was much less waste. Try elevating it a little, such as setting it on a block of wood. You will have less waste. I don't have a photo of this feeder available at the moment but I have seen lots of photos of them in various threads on this site.

Usually for the first week or 2 after mine hatch I don't use the jar part or I leave that empty when I screw it on. I just fill the base. I don't hatch enough chicks to eat that much feed. Occasionally I only use the bottom of a plastic cup. Whatever gives them just enough feed until I can refill it again. After that time I can set the feeder up on something so they can't as easily keep dumping it out. I still tend to let it get run down to only a partially filled base. Not giving them an unlimited level of feed seems to make them learn to clean up what they spill even if they never actually run out.

I use Plastic feeders. The small ones for chicks then the fairly large ones in the barn.

The metal ones are great for the nursery, but not the barn or the brooder. The exposed metal in a barn and the high temps in the brooder make the metals ones undesirable to me.

I hang all the feeders so the birds can not beak the food so easy.

Well, y'all must have much better behaved chicks than I do! Mine won't leave the food in the container no mater what type I try. Last attempt, the gravity feeders for rabbit cages. Don't even get me started on that. The little galvanized trays that you have to cut your finger to the bone to remove the cover? Do you know that 2 Salmon Fav chicks and a Buff Orp can turn that upside down by all standing on one side at the same time? Did you know that they can do it again right after you refill it?

My feeders have always been hung. ATM we are using a 12 lb Little Giant galvanized gravity feeder...and it works like a charm.

I got the lid for it as well.... but really the girls cant stand on it at all...they slide right off so no worries
