This person knows fish. Please, please, please do some research. Hardly anything will be good for a 5 gallon. I have had a goldfish grow to 7-8 inches long and I am 28 and got it in 1st grade.

Betta would be my only choice if it was me.

1 inch of (full grown) fish to 1 gallon is the rule of thumb, but all rules of thumbs are not perfect and do not apply to every scenerio.

I would say get a couple of platies. They come in all sorts of colors and they even have ones with mickey mouses on their tails! Mine also had cute little personalities and they weren't too big, but big enough that you can see them. Cheap fish too. In a five gallon you shouldn't have to worry about breeding (if you get a male and female) because they will just eat the babies. (Though you probably won't even realize there are babies in the tank!)

As long as you are ok with the Betta maybe eating the ghost shrimp, depending on their size.

Never had a problem with my betta eating anything but his food. To be honest I have kept ghost with alot of types of fish and they never get eaten(oscars and pacu)...Even when thats the reason I put them in the tanks. Maybe I had stupid fish. Hahah.

Or just very polite ones.. "Oh, good morning Mr. Shrimp, how are you? Rest assured, I have no intention of eating you on this fine day."

At first, I want to say male betta is best for 5 gallon fish tank. The other fish like guppy, red shrimp (it can use for 10 gal also), spixi snail are good. But you remember if there is betta fish, you have to concern, whereas betta fish is moving fast, it's better to keep gold fish with this. The best adjustable fishes are betta with gold fish together. I have set up the same way and my fishes stay strong and look fresh.
