What Kind Of Fruit It Is?

Watermelons aren't on trees.

The plant is not growing from a tree, it looks like a vine. It looks like some type of melon. It does not look like any pumpkin or squash. They have different leaves. The leaves looks similar to my cantaloupe, but the fruit looks more like a honey dew.

Yes, it is a vine. It is growing up the chicken pen. One of the fruit is on the ground and the others are hanging from the wire. I assume it is not ready to pick because the vine is still green.

You say you feed them leftover fruit, is that fruit that you grow yurself, or that you buy? The leaves look a lot like cucumber, perhaps either crossed with something else or reverting back to something in their background if they were hybrids. If it is something crossed with a gourd, it would taste pretty nasty. Otherwise, maybe you should try it, might actually be tastey! What color were the blossoms?

it would have been something i paid for. the blossoms where yellow. it just doesn't look normal. i have never watered it. i assume it is something cross. if i keep the seeds and plant them next year, assuming it tasted good, will it grow and be the same thing?

Still being green means nothing about ripeness.

It isn't a watermelon though - Watermelons have oak-like leaves and tiny flowers that are pale in color with large, very prominent genitalia.

Normal melons have rounded leaves, but not quite as lobed as yours, with small bright yellow petals and the genitalia is hardly there.

If it is something that grew from what you paid for, it will not be the same if you saved the seeds, it will vary. Almost all melons from the store are hybrids, and thus, will not breed true even after the second generation. Yours may vary slightly or by a huge amount.

Still, I'd cut one open, ripe or not, and show the inside. I can help you identify it a LOT just by seeing the flesh color and rind color, seed amount, etc. Also, do any of them smell at all? Tap on them, how do they sound? Do the tips smell much?
