What kind of grass to plant

So, I am thinking about planting some sort of grass along a fence line just inside the yard my hens free range in and am wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what is hardy as it has to grow in soil that has largely been unworked for a few years and just sitting. I live in California so climate is mild. I am also looking for it to be nutritious and delicious for the chickens. I realize the chickens will decimate it so I want to get it a good start before I let them at it. Any ideas?

you can grow lots of stuff for them I have a mix of organic heirloom Oats, clover, mustard, peas and a few other things that I am growing. you can also just get one of them (from anywhere) as a few of the varieties do not need great soil or a lot of water.
