What kind of hen?

Long story short, no fowl in this little town in NC. Neighbor was grandfathered in so HE can have chickens. I may could sneak in one but not 4 more. I would certainly love to though.

I have never understood the reasoning behind legislation on keeping birds in towns. Provided they have adequate room, they are usually far less disruptive and far more useful than say a dog is in that environment. Regardless of my views, the illogic of them saying 'he can have chickens, you can't' is absurd. But, to skirt the law, perhaps your neighbour may like a little gift of four bantams after your hen has raised them? ;)

No one even knows that she is here, she is that quiet. She had a "sister" but she got gone. You are correct in that my other neighbors dog barks quite often. I don't want or need a rooster which makes the most noise. But I will be on the lookout for a newly hatched bantam... Thanks!

Check at your local Tractor Supply Co. They get in new baby chicks every week this time of year and again in the spring. Call ahead to all the TSCs within an hour drive of you and ask if they have pullets. you'll have a 90% chance of them all being littler girls. Nice quiet pretty little girls.
I've finally gave up on trying to break broodys. I have tried every trick in the book only to have them go back to being broody in a week or two. I've found the best thing is either give them some eggs to hatch off or wait a week and slip some babies under them. Imho, that's the best and easiest way to break a broody.
:highfive:

TSC is where I went. Yes they did have pullets. If I remember correctly, these were little fluffy black chicks. Another thing I did not mention, I have 4 cats. They do not mess with the other chickens around. In fact, they mingle in with them and take naps. But I am a little hesitant about chicks....

You have to keep the cats and the biddys seperated till they get big enough to whip a cats tail. Otherwise the cats will try to eat the chicks if left alone with them. But hopefully that Broody/Momma will put a real hurting on the cats if they even think about getting too close to her babies.

Perhaps the neighbor has a chick you can borrow for her, and then you can send them both home once she thinks she’s all finished up? Sweet little chicken. She came to your place to sit on her eggs because it sounds a lot more quiet over there! (I’d be very wary of the cats tho- you know the story of the scorpion and the frog.. and it IS their nature! )
