what kind of incubator do you use

I have been looking at the syrofoam ones and getting more confused by the day. Went to buy one today and they old man at the feed store swears they don't work! And is still air or forced air better? All input needed. Just want these for hobby so don't want to spend alot

I have a Little Giant incubator thats been successfully nonstop incubating eggs for (let me count...) 15 months now --- hasn't been unplugged, turner is turning (ick, I ought to stop production and clean that thing).
I haven't touched the temp adjustment in months.
I have another LG I use as a hatcher and have the same confidence in it. I plug it in and it finishes the hatch just fine.

I have the same set up as Lisa... I still like my broody-2003s though...(silkies) They're pretty efficient..

I need a broody-2003 model. Or even a newer model. I must be the only chicken owner who's silkies and cochins dont go broody! I used to have a big old buff orp broodibator but my sis gave her away while I was gone.

Cindydj.... the foam ones work fine for "hobby hatching". I recommend a forced air for chicken eggs. For a lot of duck eggs I would recommend a still air. Definitely get the automatic turner if you can afford it. More important than saving work, it lets you keep the bator closed which keeps the humidity and temp stable. Get one with a window!

I use three foam Hovabators...... Two for incubating, one for hatching.

My bet is, the guy at the feed store has a sportsman to sell you!

I have 2 Little Giants that I have been useing for 2 years now, and they work just fine for me. I have babies hatching in one of them right now actually!

Goes back to Whatever works for you stick with it ! - I couldn't hatch anything in my LG and my neighbor took it and hatched a 100 or so in 3 mos --- I use the Brinsea 10 and get great hatches from my eggs 0 shipped so far but I am hoping getting the eggs from Mel is going to change that !!!! I also haven't hatched a serama egg in my Brinsea shipped or non-shipped but I know Jen hatched one in her LG if it works for you use it

thanks for the help. It was funny because the old man was just a coffee drinker in there and the lady said don't worry he gave his to my brother and he hatches in it all the time...LOL! I went and got it today. Trying to regulate the temps now...I did get the turner.

I want some silkies so bad. I had them as a kids and got some last year and the dog got to playing with them and got a little rough....I think I may have found some local, I hope so. My daughter says she may have to have some to show also...my husband calls them foo foo chickens...

There is a guy here who has a used sportman for $250. I have not gone and looked at it. He hatches lots of chickens so I am not sure why he is selling..What do you look for in a used one?

Dipsy I love all the pictures of your chickes and your avatar pic. I love to garden too and usually have a large green house outdoors, but since we moved out here in March I haven't gotten back into it. The kids say I now have eggs on the counter instead of lots of baby plants....
