What did you do in the garden today?

Regarding garlic, is this you guys/gals experience? I plant mine in October and it comes up pretty soon after that and gets to about a foot tall. The plants survive the winter cold without growing any more. Then they start growing again when it warms up early spring.

I plant my garlic 6 inches apart in rows, with the rows 6 inches apart.
My climate is quite different, but this is what I do. I save the biggest cloves for planting, and plant mid-October, after prepping the bed with compost. I mulch with straw if I have it, leaves if I don't. Sometimes they sprout in the fall, sometimes not.

When I start seeing green poke through the straw in the spring, I pull the straw back a bit, and leave it around but not over the plants. Add some compost.

I have been planting them about 6" apart, rows the same.

This year, the bulbs in the row I dug have looked a little smaller than last year. Maybe a better way to put it is, I didn't see as many, "holy cow! that's a big bulb of garlic!" bulbs.

The other row might be different. Half of it is a different variety, and based on the size of the plants, they'll be smaller bulbs.

Mine doesn't come up until spring. It gets, or used to, -20f

I have considered a PO box BUT then the address would need to be changed AND I’d end up paying rent on a box as a specific consequence of crappy/untrustworthy service. So, the USPS would get me to spend more money on horrible service AND I’d have to go get it.
Yep. And there are no POboxes here to spare. They are reserved for the residents of the village proper. RFD people have to wait for an RFD box to go free to rent. And I'm not paying for the privilege.

I order my sunscreen from an online company called Butter Me Up Organics. We took this on our cruise last fall. Worked wonderfully both in and out of the water.

Ingredients: Coconut Oil*, Shea Butter*, Mango Butter*, Non-Nano Zinc Oxide*, Non-GMO Grapeseed Oil, Vitamin E*, Beeswax*
*Indicates certified organic
I am going to order this tomorrow. Thank you!

I plant my garlic 6 inches apart in rows, with the rows 6 inches apart. I try to make the most use of the space in my garden. But maybe I'd get larger bulbs if I space them further apart.

I planted my garlic 4 inches apart, in a block. Their roots don't spread out super far, so it's fine to plant closer together.

I got a huge harvest with great bulb sizes per variety this year.

Garlic, if you plant the small cloves, will make smaller heads. The bigger the clove, the best chance you have at getting a large head.

Having loose well draining soil makes a difference as well. Using sulfur at planting helps, mulching heavily and keeping the moisture even. Garlic does not like to dry out. Garlic likes a more acidic soil.

I plant in late October. The cloves sprout and grow a little bit, then they take off in the spring.

Do you think these would be ready in two weeks? I want to take them to the recreational markte on July 24th

Same here, as soon as it’s in it takes off. I currently plant about mid October but keep shifting to later plantings. Not sure if its correct or not but my thinking is that I would rather not see a lot of growth prior to the winter cold.:idunno:confused::idunno
