hello! looking for what others use to band Japanese quail? best type/bands to avoid/size.
I'm looking to sex my quail and think the best way to identify with out separating is to grab the males when they crow and band them.
ive been looking on aliexpress but there's so many different types.

thanks!

They're only sharp when cut with a pair of scissors or dikes. If cut with flush cutters they are not sharp at all. But not everyone has a pair of them lying around the house... I guess they still could possibly tighten up somehow

I have said it before and I will say it again, there is virtually no way a zip tie on such a small leg (so small diameter) is going to magically ratchet tighter after having the "tail" clipped off. The tail has to be pulled, which at that size of circle already needs to be a good amount of force exerted to make it any smaller. Even if you left the tail on, a bird would not be able to pull it tighter. That was the closest argument against zip ties I have ever seen. Someone thinking a second bird would bite and hold on to a zip tie while the first bird jerked away and zipped their tie tight. Even that scenario is super remote and crazy. :idunno

I am 100% in camp Zip Tie and use them all the time. Never had a problem. Put them on really young birds and have never even had a problem with them growing too large for the size/needing a new looser zip tie. :)

so would you say zip ties are the way to go over other leg bands? i don't mind buying purpose leg bands if there are better ones. as they will most likely wear them for life depending how many males i have. Most the quail are the hard to sex colors, only got a couple pharaoh

I would use zip ties. There are suppliers of bands that are small enough for quail, but I think the hassle of finding them and buying them is not worth it. Quail feet/toes spread pretty wide, so you can leave the zip tie with plenty of growing room and they will be fine for life without it falling off. I mean....they are pretty much full grown when they are crowing, so by the point you are ready to band them, they are mostly full grown and there isn't much worry about it cutting off circulation to their foot.

Thanks, looks like I'm going with zip ties :D haha i will see how it goes.
But what is the best way to cut of the excess? With out leaving any sharp bits?
