What kind of light timer do you use?

I purchased a great timer that replaces my light switch and activates the light fixture on the ceiling. It's programmed to come on at 5 am and off at 8 am. Then it comes on again at 3 pm and off at 6. If I would wish, I can push a button and bypass the timer and it will automatically reset itself. Of course I paid $28 on Amazon for it, but I didn't want to add another bulb to the coop when I already had one.

We got a really nice outdoor Brinks timer from Wal Mart for $9.00. It has a cover to keep the weather off of the actual timer!! Haven't yet hooked it up!!

Thanks for everyones help!!

So if I ad a light to extend the daylight hours in order to get more eggs during the winter.....the rooster is going to start crowing when the light comes on, right?

i got my timer at Lowes. It is one that has a cover over it and has dual settings to turn on and off in the morning and on and off in the evening. But, I only use the morning settings. My lights turn on at 4:30 a.m. and go off at 8:00 a.m. I live in Indiana.

Duh, what's a "thrift store"?

JB, a thrift store is run by charities, donations are made by folks that no longer use the items. The items are then sold in a thrift store and profit goes to support their organization.

Along with a timer and light bulb to go with it 14 hours per day, I also use a 15 watt bulb 24/7. With the very dim 15 watt, the chickens to see when it's dark to fly up to the roost. Using the 15 watt bulb for 24 hours, I don't have to have it come on to wake them up until 7:00 A.M. and off at 9:00 P.M. (14 hours of light).

For Greenwood, Indiana, December 21, 2010, using CIVIL TWILIGHT and DST, I get the following:
Twi: 7:30am
Sunrise: 8:01am
Sunset: 5:23pm
Twi: 5:53pm
Moonrise: 5:56pm
Moonset: 8:18am
Full Moon: 3:14am
Rounding off to 8:00 A.M. - 5:30 P.M. I will only be getting 9 1/2 hours of light, so I need to add 4 1/2 hours of light to the end of the day (10:00 P.M.) or wake them earlier, say 7:00 A.M.; that's what I'll do. Therefore, my timer will be set to turn on the light at 7:00 A.M. and off at 9:00 P.M. (14 hours of light).
