Ok, I know the CF type bulbs you are talking about. I'm replacing all mine in the house as needed. I just use the regular (cheap) ones in the house. They are worthless for quick light outside when it is cold because it takes them so long to warm up and cast decent light.
I was talking about lighting a single pen aprox 24"x36" with a 7 watt nightlight. That's really all the light you need for coturnix. I solved my light cost equation with zero extra cost, by arranging my pens around my security light, so I don't really need anything extra. There is a cost involved with that, but I pay that light bill anyway, and don't have to add it to my bird expenses.
