These were labeled at TSC as cuckoo marans, but I’ve read about them having white spots on their heads? None of the chicks in the bin had white spots on their heads, they do have pinkish toes with small amount of feathering to legs/feet. But I’m wondering if these are different type of maran. They were labeled as pullets.

Cute babies! 🥰

Marans is always said with the S at the end even when referring to an individual.. after the region they hail from in france, for informational purposes.

If your TSC orders from hoovers (like mine does) then that narrows down the options to French Black Copper or Midnight Majesty.. as they are clearly not Wheaten and with no head spot I would agree not cuckoo..

Midnight Majesty would be my top guess.. though I would also have to wait and see what truly develops with some maturity.

Midnight majesty.. according to my current understanding are actually a black sex linked hybrid rather than a true Marans.. no females would have head spots.

I got a baby chick like that too from Meyer and waiting to see if Maran and then what. I identified it as a golden cuckoo Maran because of the yellowish spot on the head. Looks similar to the black sex link day old chick but it is not.

Quick update, here are chicks now. Some are coming in with some copper/brown on chest and neck, some still pretty much all black with white chest/faces.

I have 2 Copper Maran from Meyer and growing well so far. Copper feathers coming in on the neck as expected. Looking forward for their beautiful eggs.

Nice chickens.
My 5 original BCMs are from Meyers also. The 3 hens don't lay super dark but beautiful none the less. Fortunately my best roo came from a dark egg so the pullets are laying darker than their dams are.
