Wow, Julie! You asked for it...that is opinions, I mean. Some of these opinions I agree with and there are other, well not so much.
There are exceptions to every rule and most people have a favorite dog and think everyone would love that type of dog. I have never had the same type of dog twice except for Austrailian Shepherds. Aussies require a job or ten jobs by the way. We currently have 5 dogs. The Husky is asleep on the floor, the schnauzer is asleep on my lap, the shih-tzu is asleep on the chair, and the boston terrier and the cavachon are laying on the couch with my husband. Guess where my boys are...Not Here.
If you were to ask them (now 14 and 20) who their favorite dogs were the answers would be the shepherd/lab mix we had and the rottie. Big ruff and tumble baby dolls. Play ball, chase, pull sleds, bed hogs, lap dogs, etc.
Animal Rehoming is what I do as a hobby. Just tonight I was at our local Humane Society taking pictures of dogs and cats needing homes. Earlier today I was on the phone with our Animal Control officer helping to find fosters. Heart Strings is an Animal Rehoming group I am a proud member of. Long winded usually I am not but you got lucky (ahem) tonight.
Kennels are full of dogs needing loving homes. Check animal control kennels, humane societies, even reputable breeders. Ask if you and you son can put in some time volunteering....dog walkers are ALWAYS needed and appreciated. When you have done your time and research, open up your heart and let a dog speak to it. When it is the right dog, you and your son will know.
lastly, I would rather see a happy dog in a families back yard than a happy or confused or scared or lonely, etc. dog in a shelter.
I hope you find the dog of your dreams and he spends his time dreaming beside your son in bed!
