Got these 2 quail today. Was told the darker one is a celadon and the other is a different breed but they weren't sure what breed they are. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Also how do I tell their gender? Can you tell from looks?

I'm no expert but if I was to guess, and I am absolutely guessing, it looks like the first one may be a Rosetta with perhaps another gene lurking in the background like maybe sex-linked brown, and the second one appears at first glance to be a pharaoh (aka wild type) with some kind of diluter gene affecting it. There are numerous diluter genes so you'd likely need some input from the breeder to determine what's going on there.

  • Blue/Blau
  • Silver
  • Lavender
  • Cinnamon
  • Andalusion
  • Sandy
  • OZ snowy
  • OZ Dilute Recessive

They are both coturnix. First is a rosetta color. Celadon just means that it was hatched from a celadon (blue) egg or has that gene in the line. 2nd is a wild type or pharoah color.
1st is not feather-sexable color, it will need to be vent sexed or verified by crowing/laying. 2nd is feather sexable color and from the current photo angle appears male, but need photo of breast for verification.
