What kind of rooster should I breed with my buff orpington hens?

Hi! How about a Naked Neck rooster for your buff girls?

Get you a Easter Egger Rooster.

What will an EE do to egg size?

That's hard to answer because each hatchery has their own recipe for EEs, and each can vary quite a bit in different qualities. Some are really docile, some are really flighty. Some are excellent layers, some are awful layers. Some lay medium size eggs, some lay jumbo. Some lay blue, others green, some brown, and then the rare olive or white. Appearance can be all over the map, LOL.

Long story short, it's kinda hard to answer that question. All I can say is mine from McMurray were often in the X-Large range.

They would be an interesting mix but they are small and poor egg layers.

I'd go with one of the following; Barnevelder, Barred rock, Brahma, Chantecler, Delaware, Faverolles, Minorca, Sussex, Welsumer, Wyndotte and of course a buff Orp to keep the line going.

Hey, this is fun picking out roosters for Henry.

Henry said he wanted interesting mutts, RIR's would give him more reddish birds. So I went through Henderson's list looking for breeds which would be good egg layers, good table birds and add interesting color to his mutts.
It just occurred to me that a Blue Orp rooster might mix the color up, I tried the calculator but not sure what it produced. The mix would maintain Orp egg production as well as table size.

Well, I have considered RIR's, but I just had a small flock of them (They were the neighbors dogs' midnight snack when I forgot to lock them up.) Kinda tired of those colors. Want something new. I will probably go with a buff, and maybe another kind. Whatever I come across first.

What about an Australorp? I once saw some pics of this cross and they were really pretty! If I'm remembering right, they were golden with black spangles. If you fancy any particular cross, you can ask on BYC and someone will probably have pics of what it will look like!
