Is there a possibility is could have been an elk? One day I was watching monster quest & they were looking for some form of big foot & they had a "big foot call" that was later identified as an elk & it sure sounded like a woman being murdered. Ill look up a sound link to see if I can find one that sounds similar.

ETA: I would also guess mtn lion but heres an elk call. It doesnt sound a whole lot like the one on MQ but its close than the others I found http://soundbible.com/tags-elk-call.html Could you get a game cam & set it up so maybe you could catch this mystery animal on film?

I didn't read the thread . But bobcats scream when their mating thats one way they locate each other.

I've heard people say that screech owls make a noise like someone being murdered. Other owls also scream.

I vote for a deer. More likely to have deer in NJ then mountain lions (but I am not ruling out Mountain lions, just hedging my bets)
I heard a sound like someone being seriously hurt and possibly whispering "help"...it went on for quite a while...actually only stopped when I went in the house to get a witness to the sound. Shortly after the two of us returned to the porch some deer went crashing through the underbrush beside the house.
Wait, maybe they were running from a mountain lion/cougar/bobcat. But I doubt the sound came from the cat, more likely from a deer that a cat took down.

Another thought Peacocks make a Gawd awful sound that sounds like a woman screaming too.

Around here we have the occ. Mt lion and elk. Mt lions sound like a woman screaming bloody murder, elk sound mostly like a woman screaming, but with a gruff, hoarse sound "behind" the scream.
