a friend of a friend had to get rid of 2 turkeys. theyvare both two years old. one is a hen and one is a tom. i just got them today and know nothing about turkeys.... How often will she lay eggs? Winter care... can i put the in the same Coop as the chickens?

Nice turkeys!

It looks like a Black or perhaps some kind of bronze and then the other is a Jersey Buff or Bourbon Red. They are heritage breeds, which means they are great at foraging, they like to perch in trees, and the hens like to go broody. They don't usually lay at any time besides spring and summer, though the eggs are good for eating or hatching. They are very hardy in both the heat and the cold, and only need a simple shelter. They should not be allowed to free-range until they imprint on their new home. They need a game bird diet or they won't get enough protein.

Feel free to ask any other questions.

Best of luck!

How long should they stay in the dog crate? Do they go to bed like chickens? I was going to put all my birds in an addition on my shead for winter, i have duck, chickens and turkeys. I just got the ducks July 4th But have had chickens for 3 years now.

They should stay inside of a pen/run/crate for a week at he least and then grafted into their new coop. After a week in there they can be released and they should return to it or at least near it at night. Make sure they know you feed them, so if they consider running away they will return for a meal.

is the crate not a acceptable night house?

The crate can work for a night house, however, they are likely to get bored in a crate if they have to stay in there for more then a couple days. They like to perch up high, so they probably won't return to them, but that doesn't mean that they can't sleep in there if you want them.

I didnt realize they can fly, i thought the would been heavy.

Heritage turkeys can fly pretty well (not as well as wild ones). It is the commercial, Broadbreasted variety that cannot fly, but those generally only come in white and bronze.

They might fly away? I dont want that! My yard is fence free, the chickens go to bed in there Coop, the ducks dont go to bed But they hang out in the acer pond when know they have a Coop where they eat at. For the winter i was going to put everyone in a old died made into a coop.
