I recently had an interesting conversation with a Cornell student graduating with a degree in linguistics. He talked about languages and how even if they aren’t used anymore, they still live as a connection between the past and the present. Later on I realized that people often hate things once they are required to do it—learning a foreign language has unfortunately become one of these hated requirements. It’s sad because languages are so much more than a grade in school, or a requirement for a college. Languages can allow people to interact and connect with a whole group of people they otherwise might’ve not even met. I’m currently studying Latin and despite it being a “dead” language, I see derivatives of it everywhere. An example being the word ‘peninsula’—paene means ‘almost’ and insula means ‘island’. As we all know, a peninsula is a piece of land almost entirely surrounded by water.

So I’m curious, whether it’s your mother tongue or a language you learned later, how many languages do you know? If you could, what language would you learn next?

I’ll go first. I know English (obviously), Mandarin, Latin, and a bit of Korean and Spanish. I only took one year of Spanish so I’m pretty trash at it. I probably only know 3 of the 5 fluently. After mastering all five, I think I would probably learn ASL and Hebrew next.
