What Language(s) Can You Speak? (for fun)

I'm curious about all you people who only speak one language. Did you never study another language at school, or did you just forget everything about it ?

Never studied anything other languages.

My mother tongue is Italian, I studied Spanish and German and I lived in Spain, Germany and Austria. I lived in Catalonia, so I understand Catalan but I can't really speak it. Spanish became my first language when I lived there, I even used to dream in Spanish and at some point I couldn't express myself in Italian anymore. Now I'm back in Italy and I dusted off my Italian. I never studied English but somehow I learnt something, my English is better than my German, anyway!

Funny story about German friends. My cousins had a German foreign exchange student and when he first came over from Germany he brought some friends with him to help him get settled in. I lived next door to my cousins in the middle of nowhere and I also did not know about the exchange student arriving. Apparently it was a last minute decision because the other family that was supposed to take him in backed out. I woke up one sunny summer day and my family was gone which wasn’t uncommon in the summer. I decided that I would go for an early morning swim in our pond since no one was there (we usually had family breakfasts). I started walking down the drive to the pond which was a decent distance from our house. As I got closer I could hear male voices speaking in german with strong accents. I get to the pond and there are four German teenager boys in my pond. Again, we lived in the middle of nowhere, my family was gone and no one thought it pertinent to tell me this exchange student was arriving let alone with friends. I shuffled past the pond quickly while they stared at me and I stared back at them. One waved and in a very heavy German accent said “Hello” to which I returned the most awkward of wave. In a very confused state, I made a bee-line for my cousins house. They were the closest neighbors and I was just a teenager girl that did not own a cell phone. I burst into their house and said “Does anyone know why there are four Germans in my pond?” Everyone just started laughing at me. I was not amused at the time

i speak English and just enough Spanish to maaayyybe have a short conversation. I am hoping to learn German in the future

I speak native English, and I’ve learned a significant amount of spanish (I wouldn’t call myself “fluent”). I just started learning Portuguese for a trip. I know a handful of German words.

Did your school just not offer any language classes ? That's sad. Грустно. Most of the more basic schools in the US will at least offer Spanish or French.

There has been a movement in schools and colleges to get a computer language to be credited the same as a foreign language. (I don't agree with this because computer languages lack the spoken and cultural components that foreign languages have. Even Latin, which isn't spoken anymore, has a cultural component that a programming language lacks).
