I went out to coop the chickens and found that they had cooped themselves and all I needed to do was shut the door. Chickens really are smarter than quail. Not that that takes much. Quail are dumb as rocks.

Your conclusions are not necessarily correct. They have entirely different instincts. Too often people think that one species is smarter than another species based solely on instinctive behavior.

I actually do know that. Chickens are pretty domesticated, which makes them easier to train and they do learn fairly quickly as long as you treat them like chickens.

Quail are quail, and you have to expect them to act like quail. For their tiny size and prey status, they act as expected.

Last field trial for the season at the club went smoothly, and my young male got 2nd in a decent sized class.

Church in Aztec, NM for the first time in over 15 years. A lot of folks have moved or died, but several remain and after a moment's disbelief, recognized me. Great fun! Many hugs.

The hen at the bottom of the pecking order in our flock was being bullied so badly she wasn't getting any food. We had to put her in a pen by herself so she could eat.

We are slowly trying to integrate her into a group of three hens that live in the pen next to hers. Each day we put them together in a "neutral ground" pen where they're separated by hardware cloth so they can't peck at her. She's on one side and the three hens are on the other.

At first there was a lot of growling and flaring cape feathers and stink eye and pecking at the divider. That eventually stopped. Today was the first day that they spent time together without any obvious signs of conflict! At one point she was standing next to the divider grooming herself and one of the other hens lay down next to her on the other side of the divider.

They are coming closer to tolerating her, I hope. I'm so glad. She hates to be alone and I don't blame her!

Home again, home again, jiggity jig! It's so cold here! Yesterday it was 27°F when I got up at 7 a.m. and it felt like 50. I hardly even needed a sweater. That's what low humidity does.
