what makes a red sex-link chicken

Quote:
All the Red Stars I've seen either live or in pictures didn't have the White/pinkish earlobe that would be one of the results from a red ear-lobe X white earlobe F1 cross would yield.

Gold sex-link types which include the following names:
Red Stars, Golden Comets, Golden Buffs, ISA Browns, Cinnamon Queens, and any of the other cazillion named red/white sex-link type hybrids are usually crosses of a gold gene(RIR, NH, Prod. red) male X a silver gene (White Rock or RIWhite) brown egg-laying, production type female.

A red roo(RIR,NH,orPro.red) over the Delaware, Silver-laced Wyandotte or the other Columbian type(Rock, Wyandotte, Lt. Sussex) will yield a solid red female like the roo with the black in the tail and neck feathers, no white. These are usually marketed as Red or Brown sex-links that some call Cherry Eggers, brown egg-layer something another/ #### and also some call these crosses Production reds (which by breed standards they are not) as this is a very deep subject on this site.

Yes this would make a sex-link type chick if the white is not dominate or it will produce all white chicks which are not sexable by color at hatch.

Should make a fairly dark egg especialy if the dark egg gene from the marans is carried over and also the marans has to be a dark egg laying type for this to happen as all marans don't lay the really dark eggs that most think they do.

We will be hatching them shortly. We put that pen together a week ago but now it's so cold they don't seem that interested! We use a RIR and RIW both are Hatchery stock for this cross.Mine lay like crazy even in this crazy weather. They are the same as Hatchery stock sex links but saves local people shipping and buying 25 chicks when they only want 6.I also use my Heritage Delaware's some.It makes some huge layers that still lay every day but right now I need them in my Delaware pen.
However the traditional sex link crosses don't lay real dark eggs and designer sex links may not give you the production you want.

If you want to make sure you get sex link BROWN egg layers, use parents of brown egg layers, like RIR XWhite rock = golden comets brown egg layers. The red star are from leghorn cross which are white egg layers......... Mt Healthy carry 5 sex link now.

The name has to do with what kind of parents are used.

Golden Comets(buff lik), Red Star(red link) already post their parents.

Black sex link, RIR roo X Barred Rock hens = brown egg layer

This is my first year with chickens and I know for a fact I will have them till I'm too old to care for them. They have become a huge part of the family! I have 10 Golden Comets that have produced as of today 1104 eggs since the first one on Sept. 7th. It blows my tiny little mind. I never thought they would be such prolific layers even with the temps around zero in an unheated coop. Most of my learning was from this site and others or a friend of mine. Now on to my question. Can I breed my girls back with a RIR and expect similar results from their offspring? They are 8 months old. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

They will no longer be sex link, so can NOT sex them by color, pullets will be both colors, still real good layers, but not as good as the golden comets.

Thanks deerman for the prompt and informative response! I'm retiring next spring so I'll have time to watch them grow into whatever they become. Think the excess roo's will find a new home. Thanks again!

I completely DISAGREE with deerman on how they lay.We cross our sex links back to our RIR and RIW since they won't color sex at birth it doesn't matter on that however those pullets have laid equally well and BETTER than the original sex link.We have them laying 70+ gram eggs Daily most often 75 grams and 100 grams from them as the normal not the exception. Our sex links have become a vital part of our breeding program now to obtain those Xl and jumbo daily brown egg layers...oh they come out in some beautiful color patterns. When people come out here they see our purebreds and comment on them but its always the Designer Links that they just want to take with them.

Not sure if you have Golden Comets (buff sex link) or Red sex links. IMO its hard to beat the golden comet for # of brown eggs layed, size of egg , other breeds lay bigger eggs, just not as many......but crossing them back with RIR will not hurt their laying much. Just no longer sex link, just mutt chicken. Now mutt chicken can be great layers, just dont breed true.
