What Makes a Sex Link Chick?

Do you know where to get some White Leghorns or White Rocks that will make sex-links with the orange/white hen color? I LOVE this color, I just think it's so pretty. But I'm having a hard time finding some RIWs that I like. Clint was very dissapointed in his birds from Welp, and I've heard that Ideal's birds aren't very healthy...

I'm sorry if I came across as a know-it-all. I sure didn't mean to infer that.

The thing is that most if not all White Leghorns are Dominant White just like most White Game Breeds [that is why you can make Red Pyles with them].
In order to have a White Leghorn that carries the Silver gene it would have to bred from a Silver, Barred, Cuckoo or Columbian.

I dont really remember saying that but if I did thats not really what I meant, I guess by that I meant that they were the only breed ( that I know of) to reliably be able to produce those kind of sexlinks without having to breed first to find out.

White Rocks, when they first came about, were the second Rock variety created and they were the Recessive White sports that popped out from breeding Barred Rocks. That that means that the original White Rocks would be barred under the Rec white and should technically produce black sexlinks if bred to a Red roo. But now days, there are different strains of White Rocks that are all masking different colors, So say the ones masking Barring, Black, or Partridge, they wont make Red Sexlinks at all. Then strains that are masking Columbian or Silver Penciled, when bred to a Red roo, would make sexlinks, but we havent introduced the Dom White gene yet, so those sexlinks would have black tails ( like the ones that Ideal sales that they say are from White Rock hens) Then somewhere along the line, someone probably out crossed with RIWs while trying to improve the RIW type, which would have brought in Dom White genes and if those were carried back to the White Rock line and there was a one of the Silver gened White Rocks also got the dom white, then there it would be possible to have a strain of White Rocks that could make white tailed red sexlinks. But again, there is no way to know unless you know the history of the particular White Rock line or by trial and error.

Another thing that would work and this maybe what some of the hatcheries are using in there more secret crosses. A way to do it without using an unpredictable Recessive White breed like a White Rock , would be to work with a roo from a know Silver gened breed and hens from a known dom white carrying breed and cross them together and since the roo was silver gened, all of his pullets will be pure silver gened which is needed for sexlinks, and at least some percentage of them should get the Dom white from the mothers and which would mask any black that would still be in them from Columbian genes so they would be solid white just like the RIWs and when breed to a red columbian roo, would make some white tailed red sexlinks like RIWs do.

So there are other ways to do it but I just meant that the RIWs were the only one that didnt require trial and error or work developing a strain that will do so.

But I still dont want to get into anymore arguing about what cross produces what particular brand name because thats just beating a dead horse and could go on forever with all the conflicting information thats out there.

Do you have me confused with someone else? I got my RIWs from Privett ( and Welp drop ships from Privett BTW ) But its was Privetts sucky customer service that I was dissappointed in, the RIWs ( knowing that they are hatchery birds and not the true RIW White breed) served me well for what I was wanting them for which was to make sexlinks and to bring in Dom white for a project I'm working on. They did take a little longer to start laying than I would have liked but other than that, I have no complaints about them, they were great layers when they first started and layed some big dark brown eggs. I had gotten what I needed from them and needed to cut down so now I have sold all but one of them, but to no fault of their own, I just needed the room and I had too many birds. But if you did get them, I would suggest paying a little more to order indirectly through Welp so you dont have to deal with the snotty people who work at Privett. And there are SEVERAL members here who have had the same customer service or LACK OF I should say, that I had.

Yes, I now remember that you got your RIWs from Privett. I guess I just remembered it as Welp because I know that Welp drop ships from Privett, and I was wanting to order from Welp at the time. I do remember you saying that they began laying late, and then were poor summer layers. The only other hatcheries I know of that have RIWs are Ideal and Purely Poultry. Anyone have any feedback on their RIWs?

Yes Thats right, towards the summer, they and most all of my birds slacked off laying, but right now all I have from the birds I had at the time are the one RIW and my flock of Speckled Sussex and they still really havent picked back up laying yet. Hopefully they will in the spring.
