I see my chickens have mites. As sooon as I get done posting this I will be out in the coop doing a deep clean. I know to spray it down with Permethrin 10%. I will also spray the chickens.
1. Can someone tell me what type of mites these all are. And is there any concern for me carrying them in my home.
2. Exactly how should I spray my chickens I know in their bottom area and maybe under their wings is there any other places I should spray them.
3. Any advice on how I can take care of this or ways you would do it would be most appreciated.

My bottle (Gordons Permethrin 10) says 8 oz. makes 12.5 gallons, so that would be about .64 oz per gallon of water. That is both for direct bird use and premises for poultry. Says to use .5 oz of the mixed solution per bird, or 1 gallon for 100 birds. Use a fine mist spray on them. (I'd use a hand spray trigger bottle to do the birds for better control).
Also, your picture looks more like lice to me, you can see a few nits/eggs at the base of some of the feather shafts also.

You will need to repeat treatment on birds and coop weekly, probably three times at least to get any eggs that continue to hatch.

Thank you, we are outside ( well mostly husband) shoveling the coop. Then we will spray the sucker down. I guess this evening as the chickens come in we will catch them and spray them. Can anyone tell me where and how I should spray the chickens.

PS ...I was scared it was mites and my luck be the type that can infest your home!!

Those are good pictures, and it looks like lice to me as well. Lice usually require spraying or dusting with permethrin at 10 day intervals, while mites hatch more often, and require treatment 7 days intervals. It may only take one or twi treatments, but examine the skin well to make sure. I use Gordons as well, and Martins is another brand that seems to be available more in the west. Both are 1/2 ounce dosage to a gallon for chickens. Most sources say to use 1/2 ounce of spray for each bird. Here are 2 good links to read:

I am considering investing in a bottle of Elector PSP but I wanted to know if when spraying the hens, is spraying 'over' them, as opposed to getting the product on the skin, an effective way to do this or does the product have to make contact with the skin? Thanks for sharing all your experience!

I'm not an expert, however the product has to get on the lice/mites to kill them, and since the lice/mites are on the skin or base of feathers mostly, that's where the product needs to be. I've not used Elector PSP, mostly because of cost and I haven't had a lot of lice/mite problems, but it's supposed to work in one treatment as opposed to two or three treatments with permethrin. Here's a video showing it being used:

You're welcome, the video has been available on her site for a long time, hopefully it's just a technical issue and it will be back on her site again soon! Youtube can be very useful sometimes!
