I mostly have ornamental bantam types and am thinking of adding one or two more practical-type breeds. I'e decided one will be an australorp. I have wynadottes too.

What else?
I'd like it to be something that's not readily available at most feed stores (we don't have TSC in our area)
But not something super rare. A good layer and easy to breed.

I really like my Sussex. My hens are the friendliest of any of the breeds I have. They are beautiful birds with dense feathering that stands up will to a sometimes overzealous rooster. They also are good foragers and do well in a variety of weather conditions.

I have bantams too. I tried several "big"breeds but they just couldn't hold my interest. Any way I ended up with turkens of all things, and love them! Their ugliness is refreshing from the cuteness of all the bantams! Total opposites, but it works for me,give it a try, they grow on you.

I have always been drawn to the turkens they are very cute, and I've heard that they are decent layers.
Unfortunately, I'm worried that they won't be popular with others, since I plan on breeding some to sell locally.
I don't make a profit but my hobby is costly...

Someday though, they are on my list.

I'm going to second the Sussex. We have 15 of them, plus 1 Australorp and 1 Buff Orp. I find the Austra and the BO too shy and never come for hugs, but the Sussex can't wait to jump up on my lap for a petting. I've decide to give away the other two and stick to 100% sussex.

They are sooooo friendly as chicks and while my boys have kinda just chill out alon the side lines now (super laid back) my females are always curious to see what I'm doing and sit waiting patiently to be held!
