What NOT to feed ducks

and saytay- it might have to do with the type of potato... i'm not sure... i just read it's not good for them.. being the overprotective duck mommy i am, i'd rather give them tomatoes or peppers they love.

Well, no potatoes at my house so no worries about that

If you replace the worms and grubs with beef and baked chicken, that first list you gave sounds a lot like MY normal diet! LOL

lol, we should all eat so well...

I heard you can give ducks baked chicken as long as there is no salt/spices.... but to me it just seems so um, wrong... lol

Well that could true. We all have our own opinions on what we will or won't feed our animals. I won't feed them any form of meat.. It just seems too wrong to me

If you have a bait shop near by you could get minnows every now and then. We go fishing a bit in spring and summer and catch creel chubs for bait too. They love them too. Even the big ones. It's amazing to see how fast they kill and eat a creek chub. When they see me coming with the minnow bucket they get all excited. About the only time they get excited to see me.

Now if I can get my wife to be excited to see me.

LOL. My wife cringes everytime I take my homemade chicken and noodles or left over scrambled eggs out to them. She finds it kinda creepy.

Spinach is loaded with calcium. But at the same time it has an inhibitor in it that stops the uptake of calcium. Learned that with an iguana I took to the vet 2x a week for calcium shots. Expensive lesson. I wouldn't think it would cause any problems fed in moderation to a duck. But then again mine are seasonal layers.
I tried flock raiser for awhile and lost 2 of my ducks. I now use game bird grower cut with whoe grains. Plus lots of treats of course. Minnows thrown into their pond is a riot to watch.

Yup...worms and minnows were in my plan. I am originally from Northern WI, so nightcrawler hunting was part of my childhood training

I am making arrangements to get my neighbor's pond kit she has in her yard and hasn't used for 3 years (above ground, rock surround, pump, easy to drain and clean...). Once I get it moved and set up, I thought throwing some minnows or cheap feeder goldfish in there might be a good idea. Glad to hear it also provides entertainment value!

Thanks for the info on the spinach. I can move that in to the occasional treat category. Anyone know about Kale? It is something that grows ridiculously well in my area (Colorado can be tricky as far as growing season) and we eat it pretty often. I was plan on giving them the trimmings.

Now if I can get my wife to be excited to see me.

For that, you need a bucket of cash (or designer shoes), not minnows silly boy! LOL

Kale is great. Loaded with vitamins, minerals and calcium. If you do a search on iguanas it will help you to learn alot about green veggies. My ducks really don't care much for the harder greens though. They also would die of starvation before they'd touch a bell pepper. Dandilion leaves are fantastic for calcium. And pretty cheap, since they probably grow every where but maybe Alaska.LOL
