Coop = $800
Chicks = $15
Feed + Supplies = $50
Coop Decorations and Landscaping = $100
Wine to Convince Husband He Wants to Raise Chickens = $30
Two Coop Tours to Be Sure We're Getting the Best Coop for Our Girls = $20
Hours That Could Have Been Billable Client Hours But Were Spent Reading BYC = 15+
Hours That Could Have Been Billable Client Hours But Were Spent Racing Home to Check Chicks = 20+

Um, I'm goint to stop now.

If you count the fact that I made my foaling stall into a WAY too large coop for silkies and they use my entire barn as a run.(chickens use it more than the horses btw!) My first egg cost about $8,000

If you don't count that then I would say only $200 for the predator-proofing the foaling stall. Which by the way that foaling stall was pretty darn predator proof as is.

Hello All Well it wasn't as bad as we thought it would be since we are brand new to haveing chickens and did'nt have anything.So we started with a 4x8 walk in coop and we put the roosting boxes on the outside of the coop so the babies would have more floor space and we would have easier access To the eggs. Then we built a 10 x 17 run and completly closed it in including the top with chicken wire so nothing can get in from the top or bottom.We did buy a waterer but I made the feeder out of 4"pvc pipe so that saved a little bit.Then of course we had to have feed and treats.We only have 5 chickens so I think they should be comfortable.We figure our first egg will be about 450.00.BUT the idea that we hand raised these babies from three days old to get to that egg is pricless.
