What on earth could have done this???

If you go to google and type fisher you will get the idea of what your dealing with. I see you live in eastern Georgia and wikipedia doesnt say that fishers inhabit southern states but my father had taken a picture of a fisher atop bird feeder when he was living in N. Florida north of Live Oak. It was clearly a fisher with a chestnut body and black tail. Just because we dont see them does not mean they are not there.

We have no fishers in Georgia that I'm aware of, so no worries there. Fishers in Florida??? Astounding. Never heard that--those have always been relegated to only the northern climates. We do have smaller weasels and almost every other predator you can imagine. Officially, we don't have mountain lions, but I wouldn't bet on it, no sirree.

I have got the picture somewhere, going to see if I can find it in the million pictures that my father took. You can se the spanish moss in trees in the backround, gives the picture validity where it was taken.
The wikimap shows that there aren't any in Mass but have seen them while out hunting so I know they exsist here.

One thing about chickens is they panic and can die just from the fear and stress. I lost four one night to a coon. It had one chicken down and in the corner and the other three were smushed trying to get out. A fifth survived that attack.

I recently lost one but have no idea where or how. No feathers, nothing. I have been late to lock up and it might have happened then. They too were in a fenced in yard but not in the run which is covered though not as secure as I'd like.

Sorry for your loss.

Florida has River Otter, fox (grey and red), possum, coons, beaver, bobcat, black rats, norway rats (both are nonactive species now) coyote, panthers, skunks, bear and bald eagles but no fisher cats we even have venomous snakes down there the Eastern diamondback, the cottonmouth, pgymy rattle snake, coral snake, the coachwhip occassionally in North florida timber rattlers and copperheads and we have sharks down there too. And an endangered mink. We even had a green basilisk down in 1994...2 were caught in miami canals but it is unknown if they were breeding. hahahahaha

Make sure you have a secure top on that inner fence. There are plenty of climbers and jumpers and even winged critters that can get in.
