What on Earth did I Buy?!

i just had the same thing happen. I usually use pine shavings thata are a little larger from Tractor Supply. They were in a clear bag, so you know what you got. They changed over to a white bag also! (coinsidence???) the new stuff is really small and fluffy too.

Do we need to be concerned that they will ingest the stuff around their feeders?

There are lots of differant grades of beddings. Especially when it comes to shavings, Pine or cedar, grindings( very fine) to soft and fluffy white
pine, then you have your grades course, med, fine. Double check with your local feed store, oh and theres the pelleted kind like Guardian..
You add water and they fluff and expand...I love using those for wet spots in the barn and under waterers.

That doesn't look normal for horse shavings. It's definately not SHAVINGS. Seems like it would be fine for chickens. I do know you aren't supposed to use it for newly hatched chicks until they are eating well since they will eat the small shavings and get their crop impacted.

A note on buying shavings. I have noticed the crazy prices on the small bags of shaving in the stores. The best price is the big bags sold at the feed store. Can't remember the cubic footage but the bags are around 2x2x3 ft in size and around $8. Probably the same size as the OP bought. The ones in the pet stores, Walmart etc are much smaller and still $8. The big bags may seem like a lot of shavings but even with a few chickens it get used up.
