No you do not need to buy chick starter. Buy a bag of flock raiser for them to eat. In a separate bowl put oyster shells for the hen to help her maintain healthy quality egg shells. Then have a bowl of grit to allow them to properly digest her food. You can buy smaller sizes bags of all of these. Cracked corn and scratch are not food.

I use Purina Flock Raiser for everybody. Chicks, hens, roosters. Everyone gets the same feed. Corn and Scratch are like chicken candy. They love it for sure, but they won't be healthy eating just that. Even the chicks like the Flock Raiser, I ferment it for them but you dont have to. It's 17? for a 50lb bag here. I'd buy that or whatever all flock type of chicken feed you have at your local store. And put shallow pans of grit and oyster shell out. They'll eat what they need.

Wow. I just watch a video on vermenting chicken feed. It looks easy. How do you know how much eat chicken will eat? I don’t want to make a surplus.
