O.K. So then the other day a young woman - about 14 - said to me ,"Why do we still have to have such a big military any more? It's not like we're at war or anything."


I nearly slapped her. It was all I could do. My sister was there, my brother in law was there, my friend James Yohn was killed there. Whose fault is it that this child was NOT AWARE of the fact we were at war?! Let me guess the schools are not talking about the current war because it is too recent????

My kids school adopts soldiers, they send cards and letters and packages. Their girl scout troop collects money for Operation Cookie Drop. We make up care packages for the troops (and special ones for their dogs) We worked to earn money to make up care packages for school children in Afghanistan. And this kid does not even know we are at war?!?!

Really? REALLY? Wow. My views on the war aside, that's just plain ignorant. Can we say "out of touch with the world?"

Somebody pointed out that we teach history without controversy because it's easier - mom's folly, maybe? Indeed. IF we included all the viewpoints, the students would - GASP - adopt their own position! There would be DEBATE! The horror!​

Yikes. What's the old saying? "Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it." And why, exactly, have students not been learning about 9-11?! It was a turning point comparable to the attack on Pearl Harbor or the firing on Fort Sumter - one that dramatically altered the course of the country. Maybe not to quite the same magnitude, but nobody can deny that it was a critical moment.

I'm sure this will stir the pot, but the main reason is that the teaching profession is inhabited by liberals who gave a virtual high five, in their minds, when they saw America taken down a notch or two.​

dear love and I are planning for children soon, and I am seriously considering home schooling.
My mother taught my sister and I to read and basic math before we went to kindergarten and now i know people my age who can barely read. It's maddening.

Oh, that's complete and utter bull. The reason the current war is not taught is because the texts that the curricula come from go through a writing, approval, re-writing, approval and printing process that takes years. Another reason is that history is written and taught by the victors and we haven't won anything yet. Liberals, really? Have you seen the nutjob dumbing down texts that were approved for teaching in Texas? The teachers in my school actually told my kid that she was WRONG when she expressed a liberal view on current political matters and shut down any chance of discussion or debate with her own conservative, religious diatribe. And I'm proud to be a liberal but my family is also very proud of it's family tradition of military service and we would never, ever want to see America "taken down a notch". These kinds of grossly exaggerated generalizations sound like the unimaginative blather bleated out regularly by certain FOX comedians....errrrr, journalists.
