Whoops didn't see this before my last post. I'll have to research the lethal gene

I just skimmed and article about Flemish crossing and a lethal gene

just got 3 does. Project a lady wants done and doesn't have the room at her place so we traded room and board for a project breeding for her and I get 3 pure does for me now lol prepayment she said. Maybe I can sell them. They really don't fit into my personal breeding program. I have a few lines of awesome NZWs and some medium size pet breeds in small numbers. I took the offer hearing "3 does now" for a lil room? Heck ya lol still love her sweet bunnies so don't mind them having litters here

but now am realizing these does aren't really going to provide me with much. Maybe I could cross them just for our own freezer. Lol I'd really like each creature to pay for itself and I just read Flemish eat a pound a day and breeding does MORE! REALLY?

Well, considering you are just boarding her Flemish... not using them for your own good, then I would never.... EVER use them for what you want them for. No offense, but it is really irresponsible to use someone elses rabbits!!

Angel, lethal genes are really rare. In this case the lethal gene that produces peanuts is the DWARF gene from MINI rex.... Seeing as you are raising a 10lb breed of rabbit with no known lethal genes I think you are safe! XD But it is a pretty simple concept. They carry one gene, they express the trait in a passive way such as dwarfism, if they carry two then something goes horribly wrong with normal body systems.

Some other examples of lethal genes are more commonly seen in dogs... Two natural bobtail genes such as Corgis have is lethal, and two copies of the "Merle" color gene (that pretty mottled grey in Aussies and great Danes) winds up vein lethal sometimes and frequently results in blindness, deafness, and other problems. They also tend to be very white which has lead to the misconception that white dogs are always deaf or blind...

Never heard of Flemish having that sort of gene. Will hafta look it up!

Oh, i'm so sorry. I thought you said you were housing her rabbits for her breeding program but still using them for your's without asking her. I'm really sorry, thanks for clearing that up

Angel, the gene that results in a peanut, at least the peanut I had, was the result of what is called a double dwarf, the baby inherited the dwarf gene from both parents. This can happen in mini Rex bec mini Rex carry the dwarf gene to make them smaller, but there are lots of other breeds that have that, too. Not the large breeds though. My rabbit that had the peanut was pregnant when I got her but no one knew she was. A peanut is not the same as a runt. A runt has the potential to live. A peanut cannot live, it cannot digest food. I'm not a breeder so I kind of fell into the experience although hand raising the remaining kit was a beautiful experience and here is the remaining normal kit all grown up. I have two bunnies. They are both males and very good friends. They are pets so I had them both neutered.

We have an old school house, converted to a storage/work shed area/shop and now rabbitry lol lotsa room, for babies my stock is holding out on lol

I have my herd set up in an area, her project in one room and rescues in another I love having the space. If hardware cloth was cheaper the whole building would be converted...I have plans lol for now tho separate rooms helps a lot!

*I'd never use outside stock unless intentionally set up to do so with other owner* I take my name seriously and what goes in and out of my personal herd.
