Sorry to hijack the thread today with pictures!!!
But I had one more question.
We just rescued this big guy who came all the way from Pensecola, Florida. (Family found him while on vacation after a storm and couldn't find the owners so they brought him back here to Ft. Bragg NC about 6 months ago. They're now moving and can't take him so needed to find him a rescue home since anyone who inquired about him wanted him for food due to his size. So we offered to bring him in as a pet, he's sweet as can be). Anyway, he's obviously got red eyed New Zealand white in him. But he has the darker ears and points on his face. Is there anyway to know what he's crossed with? With his size do you think it could be Flemish Giant? (My NZW's are big, but not as big as this guy!).
I'm still fairly new to the rabbits...

What do you think on breed mix?

That looks most like a breed called a Californian, which is also a very popular commercial breed. They are big rabbits, though NZ's average a pound or so heavier. He might be a Cali/NZ cross, but nothing about him says FG to me.

How much does he weigh?

Altex.

The Altex was developed from Californian, Flemish Giant, and Champagne d'Argent rabbits; it is frequently crossed on New Zealand Whites. Altex get pretty big - up to 20 lbs, sometimes.

Thank you all for the feedback! It looks EXACTLY like the Altex!!!! The only breed I was aware of with the Ruby eyes was the NZW so that's why I automatically went to that. This guys huge, bigger than my NZW's. The family I got it from knew nothing about it other than there was a bad storm and it showed up at their mom's house in Pensacola, Fl. They couldn't find the owner so they brought it back to NC with them. Now they couldn't keep him so I took him in. The ears, nose, eyes, feet look exactly like this one!!!

Altex has Cali markings, NZW eyes, Flemish sizes. How did I forget about this rabbit?

I have never even heard of an Altex before, but I am pretty sure you are right.
I don't know what I'd do without this thread, I am new to rabbits.
If I end up breeding him to one of my NZW does down the line, do you think some of the Cali coloring he has would come through on some of the babies.
He's huge, but he's so sweet. He just loves to snuggle. Sits right on your lap, doesn't even try to hop away.
