- The buck, the doe and I figured it out lol. I'm pretty scratched up but vert excited, Time to figure out how to trim my does nails. Good Lord does she hate to be carried. The calendar is marked for 10 days to try palpation, 28 days to put the nest box in and 31 days to look out for pinkies. He succeeded two times then she started getting snarky with him so I took her out. Patience is not my strongest character trait. No time like the present to learn. Did I mention how excited I am?

Very exciting! Hopefully your buck was successful. We are on day 22 with our two does, so excited! I had no luck with palpation, couldn't really tell what I was doing and didn't feel anything for sure. Both girls are acting differently, one is nest building in her litter box and being shy, the other is constantly trying to escape her hutch. Thankfully, both are being sweet so far. One more week or so to wait, hopefully both of us have successful births.

Will patiently wait for your pix. Are you feeding your does any differently since mating them?

I am not feeding them differently, just a little more. I didn't switch to alfalfa pellets b/c I had read and heard that mini rexes can be prone to bladder sludge, and alfalfa can worsen that. We have never had the problem, but didn't want to chance it. The pellets we have them on is Manna Pro Show formula, and it is 16% protein, which is just slightly higher than regular timothy feed at 14%. Most alfalfa feeds have 18%, and I give them a slighty higher amount. They were on 1/4 cup of pellets and unlimited hay before, they are now on just shy of 1/3 cup of pellets. This is working for us so far, the girls seem healthy and are doing well. We will monitor and may add some alfalfa hay while nursing, depending on how they are doing, maybe supplement with some fennel to help with milk production if needed. They get some treats, but minimal. A slice of banana, a baby carrot, some basil leaves, mint leaves, things like that.

I raise mini Rex's and feed alfalfa pellets to everyone, bucks, does, showers, breeders, preg, nursing. Weaned. Everyone, never had a problem.

Thanks for the input! I know they don't all get the sludge, just being cautious. I also wouldn't want them to get too plump, we have a doe that is on the upper end of the scale. Do you have a reason for feeing all alfalfa? Have you tried timothy based pellets and like the alfalfa better? Just curious, we are always learning. I like the pellets we are currently on, their coats are nicer on the show formula than they were on the traditional timothy pellets. We also give rolled oats on occassion, for coat conditioning, and have found this combo to produce a very nice coat with a good sheen. I've just gone on what we have observed, and what is recommended to us by our 4H leader. She has several breeds with different types of coats and does very well at shows, so I tend to follow her advice!
