Looks like a Californian rabbit. Temperature determines pigment production, so they're black (or blue) where the body temperature is lower. But she could also be mixed breeds, I'm not sure but I think the weight is a little on the high side

Quote: I'm afraid I'm going to disagree with all of the folks who think ^this rabbit^ is a Californian.

This is a Cali:

Look at how broad and full the Cali's body is; even the face is wide and rather round. On mickmeek's rabbit, the face is way, way too narrow for a Cali, and the body too racy. I'm afraid the only thing about that rabbit that resembles a Cali is the coloring, which was given to the Cali by a breed called the Himilayan:

Himi's are narrow and racy; the only problem is that their maximum weight is less than half what mickmeek's rabbit weighs. I think it just as likely that mickmeek's rabbit is some type of Himilayan cross, or possibly even part Standard Rex (Which can have this coloration in New Zealand) as it is to be a Cali.

Thanks for clarifying. I did notice the rabbit seemed skinny for a cali, but I didn't think it had the correct body shape (cylindrical) of the Himalayin. You're probably right about it being a mix

I know a lot of commercial rabbit breeders don't worry a lot about type, but someone would have to be breeding with total disregard for the breed standard to produce a face that narrow, IMO. Now, a narrow head wouldn't really impact a rabbit's ability as a production animal, but if a breeder isn't going to make at least a little effort to produce animals that come close to the recognized standard, is it right to call what they are producing by the breed name? I'm sorry, but this is a pet peeve of mine - I've seen an awful lot of 5 pound "Netherland Dwarfs" and 8 pound "Lionheads" that have barely a wisp of mane. I mean, if someone were selling "Golden Retrievers" that had faces like Lassie, don't you think people would question the breeding?
