Understandable, like I had my FG doe in a 3x2 cage for a week until I had the new hutch built, like you, but these breeders have them in their forever homes on the videos they open up the cage and the doe is right there standing longwise butt against the nestbox which is against the wall and nose at the cage door.and it really seems like they care for their animals, and funny enough other people commented saying things like "that cage would be comperable to you living a closet all your life" lol lol and they got mad, its like they are so obsessed with baby rabbits theyll make their does kindle in any enviroment...maybe its the $$$ they get from selling them idk? lol

I agree that there are a lot of videos on youtube showing rabbits in less than disirable conditions. I never leave comments though either. It is up to these people to morally care for these animals and they're probably going to read dozens of comments about how they are not doing a good job.
Thats another thing that bothers me just as much as animals in these conditions. The fact that no matter what video your watching of an animal, someone is going to comment that the owner is abusing the animal. Even in the most loving videos, someone will accuse the owner of mistreatment. To me it's ridiculous and really annoying. I wish people would become more educated about the species of animal in the video before telling people that they're treating them wrong.

THAT IS SO TRUE, I have infact stuck up for MANY people against those rediclulous comments about abuse, its irritates me so much especially when you see a really idiotic comment which reflects that the person commenting doesn't even own that animal, if they did they woud of been more educate with their response, which goes to show you cant please everyone :)

ok...i have to butt in...lol
i have put first time moms in a small cage with nest box so they dont have a lot of room. the purpose of this is to be sure they have their litter in nestbox not on wire. works very well. i have also learned what works for does not always work for others. also a video is a fraction of the day. not always how they live. unless you see them on a regular basis dont judge. there is always that one day you didnt get to cleaning the barn and someone ridicules you for it. but normally you are always spotless and clean.

When I was breeding rabbits about 10 years ago and working a lot with other breeders in my area, they all kept their rabbits in these cages:

Now these were Holland Lop breeders so yes I would say this is an ok size cage to keep one holland lop in indoors, if you're going to be letting it out from time to time. These breeders didn't do that much and they had 6+ rabbits that most kept in a garage or barn. When you have that many, it's easier to keep them that way especially because they can be stacked. And that works for some people.

But like other's are saying would I keep a doe in that cage with a nestbox? It'd have to be pretty small nest box. I'd probably get a hutch to use as a "brooder" to have that doe and nest box in while she had the babies. Because once those babies are 4 wks old and jumping out of the nest box, that's just not enough space in my opinion.

I guess what I'm saying here is Yes, if I had multiple rabbits (small breed rabbits) and had an indoor spot like a garage or barn to keep them in, then yes that is the most cost effective, space saving way to do it. But for one or two that are pets and are only going to be bred one or twice thru out the year, I'd rather have larger hutches and spoil them with extra space. If I had a way to build a nice large hutch with 4-6 spots in it I'd certainly get more but I think I've spent enough money on my animals the past couple of months! LOL

Babies are doing good. One of the two I thought were magpies is looking more like just a harlequin. It's fur has an orangy glow to it now rather than just pink. The one I thought might be white has some grey tinting coming in around its hind quarters and ears so I'm getting excited to see what that ends up being. That dark one I think is Chinchilla got the name Moose today. Definitely the biggest of the group! What a chunker!

As far as cages, I prefer these type cages for my rabbits. Not sure if I posted pics of my cages on this thread or another thread but here are pics of my setup. My rabbits are in an outside shed in the back in the chicken yard. I let mine out in the yard to play often.

This is the shed that they are in. It is well venitilated, so they stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

lol, all you guys including myself teat our rabbits soooo nice no matter if they are pets or meat, well if you go on youtube an look up "rabbit breeding" 90% of the videos ive seen have their does either flemish giants like mine, californians or new zealands and they are in what look to me small cages with a nest box that takes up most of the cage leaving just enough room for the doe to stand and barely lay down, does it look like that only too me lol? I feel bad, if you get a chance look it up lol, sory for venting maybe i'm just over reacting, I know its not me business what they do

Thanks guys

Aldo
Are you sure they are Flemish because Flemish are not good meat rabbits. Many breeders have smaller cages called kindling cages where they can keep an eye on the doe while she has babies, the smaller cage probly influences her to use the nest box and when the babies are big enough they go back with mom to her old cage or get sold.

I want hanging cages so bad! I really want those nice automatic cleaning ones KW always advertises in the arba magazine.

This is another reason to use kindling cages because if a rabbit had babies in these the babies could fall through the wire and die. I breed Netherlands that never get to leave their cage but they are still super papered! Netheralnds have room to run around in every cage

. I am pretty sure they enjoy their air-conditioned/heat lamp heated shed. I would be wary of letting my rabbits roam around because they can easily get parasites and diseases from wild rabbits and a lot of the grass have chemicals and pestacides.

I imagine most people here on BYC have chickens? Anyone with chickens, especially those that free range, know how bad chemicals and pesticides could be to their chickens, nevermind rabbits. So I would think anyone here who lets their rabbits roam free does not use pesticides.
