What should a small scale hobby breeder know?

I'm thinking about possibly choosing a breed like BBS Orpingtons and offering hatching eggs, chicks if hens will sit or every once in a while I might hatch some myself. This is just a thought would simply be a hobby but tell me the good, bad, and the ugly! Or what you wish someone may have told you before you had this bright idea.

I can't be a bad idea for a hobby - chicken maths is always a problem for us all!

I have set eggs four times this year under broodies - just love having little chicks around - quite amusing. Alas, i am no business man and i've given most of them away even though i specifically bred an "improved" variety of chicken (developed by the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute) which are worth more than the average chicken here in Kenya. Come to think of it, i even give my eggs to family and friends as well - Donald Trump i most certainly am NOT
