Chicks do peck each other while exploring what things are. Usually it's not as noticeable unless you get an agressive one because they have time to slowly adjust and get used to other chicks while doing occasional experimental pecks. By seperating early that chick never learned what other chicks are and so makes up for it by pecking everything for awhile. Think about anytime you introduce something new to chickens. They peck it like crazy until they know what it is. The usual solution if it's excessive is to divide them with mesh or other see through barriers until they get used to each other and then try to put them together. I've had to do that whenever I seperated weak or runt button quail chicks for any length of time. Even at a few days old they will peck each other to death if they aren't used to each other.
