I bought 10 feather feet chicks 3 weeks and 1 week ago. They are mille fleur d'uccle, white cochin, barred cochin and golden laced cochin. On their 7th day on the small cage, two to four chicks started plucking the feathers of the golden laced cochin on the same area as the picture below. When I buy the barred cochins, about 7 days ago, they already lost some wing feathers due to feather plucking, but three weeks ago, no chicks is doing it. The remaining chicks on the pet store, also lost a lot of feathers from feather plucking by other chicks, except the white cochin. When I put the 2 barred cochins on the small cage 2 days ago, the same chicks started plucking their feathers on the same spot as the golden laced cochin, whenever, they get very close to each other. I transferred them to a significantly bigger cage, which has an area of 150-180 sq. feet yesterday. However, the same chicks are doing it again. I am feeding them medicated broiler starter feed since I bought them, so I don't think protein deficiency is a problem. What are some cheap products that effectively works to discourage feather plucking in chickens, and it is not detrimental to chicken? What else should I do? Killing is not an option. Are they going to stop doing it, even without doing anything about it? One d'uccle, one white cochin and one golden laced is doing it. So far, 3 d'uccle and 2 white cochins doesn't have their feather pluck by other chicks like the ones shown on the picture(no concern regarding their feathers, being plucked).
Their new cage contains a lot of sand, rock and some plant life.
