What should I do???

Hi everyone! I just found a rooster roaming my grandparents yard. Is it normal for roosters to roam away like this..? I don't see any pins within eye shot but I know there's chicken owners around the area. What should I do? wait till sunset and see if he goes home.? Thank you all

Do you have any local facebook community groups or craigslist for your area? If so, it helps to post a "found bird" listing - with a photo if possible - so that if the bird is simply missing from his home he can be reclaimed. It is not unusual for them to wander - especially if they were driven by flight from a predator or were driven from their flock by a more dominant male who no longer tolerates their presence. That being said, it is also (sadly) not uncommon for males to be dumped by persons who don't want/cant' have them and are not responsible in how they go about things. If you can contain him safely that is an option - if not claimed you can contact your local animal control as many will take them and either house them themselves or place them with local livestock keepers who function as temporary or permanent placements for livestock animals (vs. cats and dogs at the shelter).

With roosters, a lot of them are "dumped," because the owner doesn't want or is not allowed to keep a rooster. Even when asked, most will deny it was their rooster. So you may have a rooster unless you can't keep him.

Hi all,I have not been at this for a year yet,but do like the challenge,I live in ZA and we are trying to successfully breed,our 1st success was 3 chicks 3 months ago,unfortunately lost 1 to a Cobra but the other 2 are thriving,now I have a hen sitting on 9 eggs,1hatch 4 days ago and was pecked to death the same day the rest are unhatched.Can anyone explain this behavior?We now have broody hen separate from the rest of the flock
