Okay, several of my silkies have an incurable eye virus and I was wondering what I should do with them. The vet said I should cull them, but I can't bring myself to do that. So I tried giving them away for free to someone who didn't have any other chickens and was willing to care for them. I got one person who was interested in them, but then changed her mind. So what should I do? I was thinking of just letting them free range so they wouldn't take up so much food and space, but last time I tried to free range silkies an animal killed one of them. Any ideas would be appreciated.

The vet said that they had either a bacterial or a viral infection. She gave me the medicine for the bacterial infection, but said that if it didn't work they had a virus and there was nothing she could do for it. It don't know if the'll euthanize it for me, but I would rather not have that done.

Sounds to me like the vet basically told you he/she has no idea what's wrong.

You might want to post some more symptoms and pictures and maybe people on here can tell you what's going on and what your options are.

It sounds to me like Coryza to me.
I agree with you.

I've seem worst. I'm not a vet, but I could tell you this, a vet only knows about cats and dogs. Not chicken. When its comes to treating my chicken. I know what Im doing. Can you post up a picture of it. I am postive I can help you if I could see the problem.

I don't have a picture right now, but I'll try to post one later. The silkies' eyes have foamy bubbles in the corners and sometimes they seal shut. They look and act totally normal besides that.

I have a red cochin pullet with similar symptoms. I have another thread on the board that started yesterday.....w/ pics. see if mine looks like the same thing you are seeing. mine seems fine other than the eyes swollen shut, she looks awful. I am treating it as coryza. terramycin and sulfadimethozine on the way in the mail. tylan 50 4:1 w/ water as drops in her eyes.....

I looked at your thread, and it doesn't look like the same thing that my silkies have. I don't think mine have Coryza because there is no bad odor to them.
