What should I feed my 5 month old silkies.

What are your thoughts..??? All the Silkie breeders I spoke to, told me at 5 months old they should be on layer food, so that the calcium is in their system when they start laying eggs.. I was told that grower food is for meat birds, that you grow to consume.

Yes the wild bird seed you bought will be fine for your silkies. They will love the treat!

If you start feeding the layer pellets at 5 months mixed with grower that should be ok. I won't because mine is a mixed age flock. I wouldn't feed straight layer feed even though your silkies are 5 months old as some silkie pullets may be 9 months or older before they lay. Which would be a long time to allow the calcium to build up and potentially cause damage to their kidneys.

I also have some roos and they do not need the extra calcium.

Thanks! I am not feeding them 100% layer food, so they should be okay on the calcium front. I do believe the calcium will be beneficial to developing strong bones.
