what should I give my chick?

Hey! I have a 1 week year old chick, she like's to eat a lot! but I only give her the same food over and over, I want her to enjoy something good but I don't know what I should give her. What is something she will enjoy?

About the first thing a broody hen does when she brings her chicks off the nest is take them someplace they can peck at the ground. That way they get grit in their gizzard and, I think, some other benefits. Then she takes them to eat anything she eats. Bugs, plants, chicken feed, berries, anything. She may shred it into bite sized pieces for them but they eat it. The myth that anything other than chick feed is unhealthy for them is, in my opinion, a myth.

Chick feed contains all they need for a balanced diet. I'm not a broody hen so for my brooder-raised chicks I don't really feed them any treats. They don't NEED anything else. Not that it would hurt them if fed in moderation but they just don't need it. Since chicken feed contains what they need for a balanced diet you don't want to feed them so much other stuff that it upsets their balanced diet.

Once they have grit they can eat whatever a grown chicken would eat as long as it is in bite-sized pieces. That can be vegetables, fruit, grain, berries, green stuff, or creepy crawlies. Just because they can doesn't mean they will though. Each brood is different. Each grown flock is different. Sometimes I have an adult flock that won't eat cabbage, but cabbage is often listed as a favorite treat on here. Some of my flocks love it. If you try to feed them something as a treat don't be shocked if they don't immediately love it. Just be patient and keep offering it to them in small amounts. In time they will probably eat it.

When I set food out for baby chicks when I have a broody I put it in places the baby chicks can get to it. The adults in the flock immediately wipe it out. It is exactly what they regularly eat but since it is in a new location or a new container they think it is extremely special. So if you want to give your chicks a treat, after they get used to eating it in their regular feeder, offer it in a different container. They may be scared silly of the new container or they may think it is something special.
