I am investing in some show quality brahmas off a reputable breeder in the coming weeks. He will have a selection of 16 week old Brahmas up for grabs and I will be buying some off him. I am a good judge of Wyandotte’s but have never had brahmas before and would like some advice. All his hens are super quality but I would like to pick out the special ones out of his batch. What special traits should I look for in brahmas . As I plan to show them I want to pick the best ones I can. Anyone with any advice please reply. Thanks. 🐓

If you intend to show you need a Standard of Perfection, if large fowl you'll need the American Poultry Association's Standard, if bantams you'll need the American Bantam Association's Standard. Each book lists all recognized breeds and varieties within the breeds and describes the perfect specimen in detail. You can obtain them by visiting either organizations website, the books come in hard cover, soft cover and the ABA also prints a pocket sized version.
From whom are you getting these Brahmas? I know most of the Brahma breeders in the U.S. and could probably tell you if they are coming from proven show stock or not.

Blessings,

Bo

ah thanks for the advice. I am from Ireland and however and the breeders name is Ryan McLaren. You can check him out on facebook where he has many photos of his show birds.
His Brahmas have won national shows so the quality is good. The price I am paying for my brahmas is 65euro each which is about 75 dollars

i cant find a copy of the apa sop brahma standerd. if you have a copy of the book could you send me on the page on brahmas please?

american standard of perfection 44th edition - if you google that buying options are there

Does the American standard of perfection go for irish poultry aswell or will I need the Irish version
No it does not. You would need the British Poultry Standard which also applies to Ireland.
And boy is it steep pricewise.

But it is a worthy purchase. You may find used standards more cheaply on Amazon, like this one

Not sure what it means to be the 5th edition though. It may lack some breed standards.
