Rainwing
Songster
my chickens have a mix of sand and wood... not purchased wood chips, but little sticks and broken vines that we throw into their run. their run has been uninhabited for a few years since my old flock had been attacked one night, so now there's patches of grass and stinging nettle. surprisingly the new flock eats the stinging nettle.
sand is nice because the chickens are in absolute heaven when dust bathing. it doesn't get scalding hot in the summer like beach sand, but it is pretty warm and dry so they either dust-bathe or chill in the shade in full summer daylight. it doesn't get muddy after rain either, which is another reason for why i like it. i think the sand is the reason why i've never seen mites in my hens. i dont see a point in putting shavings anywhere outside of the coop but maybe it has some benefit for when they forage, or for absorbing droppings. my run is large so i don't think much about the droppings.
